Captain Hook and October

Does anyone else think that October should be the name of the eighth month in the year? I mean, it's got "oct" in it for fuck's sake.

What's this? An etymology puzzle that's been staring me in the face my whole life and I never considered it? I am ashamed at my blind spot on October. I have no idea why it is not the eighth month, but I have a feeling it used to be. "September = 7th; "October" = 8th; "November" = 9th; "December" = 10th. But the preceding eight months don't line up the same way.

Someone answer this please before I spend two hours on Wikipedia figuring it out.

Shocking, isn't it?

I wrote 8/8 on a cheque today WITH GOOD REASON.

October was the name of the 8th month in the old Roman calander. It retained it's name even after January and February were added.

No wikipedia required.

But why make it the tenth month? Why not keep it the name of the eighth month?

I think it has something to do with Julius Caesar.

Hmm. Well, I know March was already invented at that time. Was October the 8th month when Caesar ruled, I wonder?

A more pressing question - if 7-11s are open 24 hours, why are there locks on the doors?

And why don't Mexicans eat their beans the first time they've fried them?

If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet, what happen if you strap toast on the back of a cat and drop it?
